The prevalence of overweight and obesity across Europe is high, with rates doubling during the last decades in several countries. Overweight and obesity contribute to mortality and the burden of major chronic diseases. The effects of obesogenic behaviours such as lack of physical activity, sedentary behaviours, and an unhealthy diet in the aetiology of obesity offer opportunities for prevention. Previous studies have shown the importance of identifying the life-long drivers of obesity: the 'causes of the causes' of unhealthy behaviour. The Spotlight study will focus on adults, while other studies already underway are looking at interventions for school-age and pre-school children.
